Cuvier Georges L. C. Baron, 1825 RECHERCHES SUR LES OSSEMENS FOSSILES DE QUADRUPÈDES, OU L'ON RÉTABLIT LES CARACTÈRES DE PLUSIEURS ESPÈCES D'ANIMAUX QUE LES RÉVOLUTIONS DU GLOBE PAROISSENT AVOIR DÉTRUITES Paris, 3rd edition, large 4to, bound in leather with raised bands and gilt titles on spine, with blue marbled boards 5 volumes complete (bound into 6 volumes). Overall light to light+ exterior wear (a few light rubbing and scuff marks to boards) else bindings are solid, with the book plate of noted geologist and science historian H. Stanton Hill. This is a very nice set of Cuvier’s monumental work which is widely considered to represent the birth of Vertebrate Paleontology. This is the 3rd, and expanded edition, and the last to be published in quarto size. The last (1834) edition was reduced to octavo size, though the plates remained quarto, bound into 2 atlas volumes that merely reprinted the plates of the this edition.
I spent considerable time collating the set from scanned online copies and other bibliographic sources, and count 275 plates total. it is complete except for missing 3 odd plates as noted below. Contents are:
Volume 1 in 2 parts. Part 1 with frontis portrait of Cuvier, pp. 1-174, folding table at page 144; 3 plates (I-III) called for at end of part 1, complete. Appendix paginated continuously from pp. 175-196, with 3 plates of the Ibis at end paginated plates IV-VI; Part 2 with 340 pp., 12 plates of Elephans bound in at p. 204; 7 plates of Mastodon bound in at p. 248; 4 additional Mastodon plates bound in at p. 268; 7 plates Hippopotomus bound in toward end. All plates in both Parts present. Overall volume condition is very good, light to light+ exterior wear, some marginal soiling/foxing to some plate margins.
Volume 2 in 2 parts. Part 2 is bound in at front of volume, with the half title for Part 1, is paginated continuously from pp. 239-648 + errata sheet; plates 1A-D; 2A-D, plates 3-11 fossil invertebrates, and Brogniert and Cuvier’s (1812) large folding hand colored map. Note plate plates 4-11 are bound in with text, while Plate 3 follows the geology plates 1A-D; 2A-D. Part 2 is complete. Part 1 bound as second half of volume, with Part 2 half title page, paginated pp. 230-648 and with all but one of the plates. 18 plates of Rhinoceras; 1 plate Elasmotherium; 3 plates Cheval; 2 plates Cochons; 3 plates Daman 5 plates Tapir; 11 plates of more Tapirs are called for. All are present except Plate 1 of the Daman. Condition of contents is generally very good though some plates have a light tide mark at corner margins, and light scattered foxing or mostly marginal soiling.
Volume 3 with pp. 1-412, 79 of 80 plates; Plate 65 missing. Overall some light foxing/ marginal soiling to edges of some plate sheets, one plate a bit darkened but the rest very good.
Volume 4 with pp. 1-514, 39 plates, all plates present. Unlike some volumes in the set, the plates are bound into the text per binding instructions printed on the plates proper, rather then all bound in at the end.
Volume 5 in 2 parts, bound in 2 volumes; Part 1, pp. 1-405, 27 plates; Part 2, pp. 1-547, 32 of 33 plates.
Part 1 complete, with all 27 plates. The last few plates (#24-27) have lightly soiled margins and light marginal tide mark. The last plate is a bit worse off, with a two marginal tears and a small hole in the plate, but images unaffected.
Part 2, with 32 plates. There should be a Plate 33, as indicated by online scanned copies viewed when collating. Hence, the last plate is lacking. Else volume has some light marginal soiling along some plate margins toward the rear but else generally clean.
Extremely rare, and is the most desired edition of Cuvier’s monumental work, and in a decent binding with a solid provenance. Price: $4,000.00 (stock#Cuvier1825)
Hall J. and Whitney J. D. 1858 REPORT ON THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF THE STATE OF IOWA; EMBRACING THE RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION MADE DURING PORTIONS OF THE YEARS 1855, 56 AND 57 large 8vo, two volumes, complete. Both vols. with some exterior wear, rubbing to board edges, and light soiling, but overall, exteriors are good+ to vg. Contents show tide mark on page corners or margins toward front and back of text blocks, but does not affect the bulk of the text proper, and is more prominent in Volume One then Volume Two. Of the plates, only the corner of the last plate in Volume Two has marginal soiling, the rest are show scattered, light+ foxing. The blank verso of folding map (in Vol. 1) shows the tide mark, but the printed map surface is very good. With the large folding hand colored geologic map, 724 pp., and 29 plates of fossils. Scarce. Price: $175.00 (stock#IA1859)
