The Herald-Tribune Scientific Series was an occasionally-published supplement that contained extended reporting on scientific achievements of the era. This issue covers the F. V. Plate volume in green cloth as issued, with gilt title bright, a light, scattered tide mark near bottom of some plates/folding maps and sections but not obtuse, and shows mostly on blank verso of sheets. With 623 pp., 2 folding maps, numerous hand colored folding sections, 27 engraved plates of fossils, scores of woodcuts. Includes a report by Leidy “ON THE FOSSIL MAMMALIA AND REPTILIA COLLECTED DURING THE SURVEY” amongst others by Shumard, Whittlesey, Norwood, and more. One of the great classic volumes of North American geology paleontology and exploration. The huge fold out map is present, measures approx. 28 x 48 inches, and overall very good, with some wear to outermost margins, short tear outside map border to lower margin, closed tear to one panel (no paper loss), and hand colored in large part, including Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and portions of Missouri and Illinois.
